Transforming waste
into electrical energy

Waste-To-Energy Plant

In May 2019, the State Environmental Institute (Inea) issued a Preliminary License for Ciclus to install the Caju Waste-To-Energy Plant (URE), which may be the first Plant with waste-to-energy technology in Brazil.

At the URE, waste is used as input for thermal-energy generation.

The Plant will be built at the Caju ETR and will thermally treat 1.3 thousand tons of waste per day, generating 30 MW of electricity, which is enough to supply a city of 200,000 residents.

Waste-to-energy technology is a solution with socio-environmental benefits that go beyond the energy-supplying potential.

More important than energy generation is the impact waste-to-energy plants have on waste management: since the waste is already treated at a transfer station, fewer truck trips will be needed to take them to the CTR. That reduces the volume of waste taken to the Plant, improves traffic in the city, and helps reduce the emission of polluting gases.

Generating energy from waste is a global tendency

Worldwide, WtE technology serves a population of 2.6 billion people and reduces the original volume of waste by up to 90%. For example, China turns 35% of waste into electricity, and in Europe, there are 931 WtE plants.
